Cop kills 2 robbers in Batangas heist

Tanauan City - - - Two armed men were killed after they tried and failed to rob a cop and a day care worker who had just withdrawn P830,000 from a bank in this town on Friday afternoon.
     Tanauan City Police identified the suspects as Alvin Espinosa, 21, and Alex Alvarez, both native of Iloilo province.
     According to the investigation report from this town’s PNP, the foiled robbery happened when Juanita Pineda and PO2 Joel Pineda boarded their car after withdrawing money from a Metrobank branch in the town's commercial area.
     The suspects who were with a third member identified as Rolando Alvarez, also from Iloilo, blocked the victims' path with their motorcycle and shot the front tires of the car.
     The policeman retaliated and a firefight ensued. The two Pinedas were hurt, while Espinosa and Alvarez were killed.
     Espinosa sustained gunshot wounds in his arm and stomach, while Alex Alvarez was shot in the chest and died on the spot. Rolando Alvarez escaped towards J. P. Laurel Highway.
     Responding PNP personnel from Tanauan City PS brought the suspects to Daniel Mercado Medical Center for treatment and autopsy but Espinosa was declared dead on arrival. Juanita Pineda and PO2 Pineda were also brought to said hospital for treatment.
     Recovered from the site were a caliber-.45 pistol with four bullets, a 9-mm pistol with 14 bullets, seven spent shells of a caliber-.45 pistol, five spent shells of a 9-mm pistol, and a mobile phone. (Mei Lubis)
