Batangas Sugar Central ordered closed for pollution

Balayan, Batangas - - - The Batangas Sugar Central, one of the two sugar mills in this province, has been ordered closed for repeated violations of the clean air and water acts.
Environment Secretary Ramon Paje, who is also chairman of the Pollution Adjudication Board, said the plant in Balayan, Batangas, continued to emit smoke and effluents that do not meet standards.

According to Paje, there was already an earlier cease-and-desist order which the company ignored which is sufficient cause for the PAB to initiate the filing of criminal charges against the officials of the sugar mill.

Paje also directed the DENR regional office to review other permits and clearances issued to Batangas Sugar Central and immediately cancel them if warranted.

He also ordered that the offices of the Batangas governor and the Balayan mayor be furnished with a copy of the PAB closure order.
