Batangas City – A World War II vintage bomb was found in a canal along P. Herrera Street in the village of Kumintang Ibaba here on July 26, the police said.
SP03 Arturo Patulot, team leader of the Batangas Bomb Squad, identified the bomb as an 81 millimeter unexploded ordnance – a weapon used by fighters in the Filipino-Japanese war in the 1940s.
The bomb measures 10 inches long and weighs around two kilos.
Quoting field reports, Patulot said that spouses Carlos and Josefina Bayona of Cuta Village discovered the bomb at about 9 am while they were collecting garbage in an open canal at the said street.
He claimed that the couple even wanted to sell the bomb in a junk shop but they were able to convince them to surrender the said explosive to the Batangas City Police.
Later that day, the city police turned over the bomb to the Batangas Bomb Squad for its proper disposal.
“We are advising the people that if ever they have found a bomb, they must not touch it and instead report it immediately to the police,” Patulot said. (Marlon Luistro)
